On many occasions the true damage of computer systems affected with malicious software (viruses, trojans and Ransomware) is not seen till the clean up job begins. Setting up a new computer or server requires software and files to be restored. Files are specific to organisations and it may be individual members of staff that are working on these. So if they get damaged or lost, work needs to be carried over from scratch.
In 2013 a ransomware called Cryptolocker caused damage to IT systems which locked your out of your files unless you paid the ransom. Cryptolocker was still causing damage to computers and even servers in 2016. There are some businesses that use older IT systems for medical equipment and we have just phased out Windows XP (moving to Windows 10) for that specific business. Not every business moves forward as some of the hardware isn't easy to move over. Therefore these attacks keep occurring.
We are not advocating the use of old software or operating systems that are not patched (as the earlier point shows the work we do to get away from these older systems). We have been working on next level IT systems that block threats spreading on an IT system and allow isolation and repair with the best of this offering us role back.
We tested this with 1 computer and some example files. Having use this system since early 2022, we can say we have a system we would happily promote and role out for future business systems to help with their disaster recovery, system protection and even help businesses pass Cyber Essentials.
Here is an example of a computer that was infected.
Here is an example after it was isolated, cleared and back in operation the same day.
